When does a house need repiping instead of another repair?
Repiping becomes the sensible option when leaks are recurring in different places, when pressure has dropped across the whole house, when the water runs rusty on both hot and cold sides, or when the material itself has reached the end of its service life. Galvanised steel corrodes closed from the inside and typically fails between forty and seventy years. Copper in aggressive water develops pinhole leaks in clusters. A single failure in an otherwise sound system is a repair; repeated failures in the same material are a system telling you it is finished.

How supply pipe fails
Materials age from the inside, where you cannot see it
Galvanised steel was standard in homes built through the middle of the last century. The zinc coating protects the steel until it is consumed, then corrosion builds up inside the pipe and slowly closes the bore. The symptoms are a gradual loss of pressure, discoloured water on first draw, and eventually leaks at threaded joints where the wall is thinnest.
Copper fails differently. It develops pinholes, often in clusters and often on the hot side first, driven by water chemistry, velocity at tight fittings and localised pitting. The first pinhole is rarely the last, because the conditions that caused it apply to the whole system.
Polybutylene, used widely from the late seventies into the nineties, is a separate case. It becomes brittle over time and fails at fittings, frequently without warning. Where we find it in a home, replacement is a planning question rather than an if.
Repair or repipe
Two different jobs, and the right one saves you money
A section repair is right when the failure is isolated: a nail through a line during a remodel, a fitting that was never seated properly, a frozen burst on an exterior wall run, or damage from movement in one spot. We cut back to sound pipe, replace the section with matching or properly transitioned material, and pressure test.
A repipe replaces the supply distribution through the house, usually in PEX or copper, running new lines through attic and wall cavities to each fixture group. Done well it is a planned job, not a demolition: access points are chosen, cut cleanly, and kept to the minimum number needed to reach the runs.
Material choice matters here. PEX is flexible, resists scale build-up, has fewer joints in a run and tolerates freezing far better than rigid pipe. Copper remains an excellent choice where exposed runs, high temperatures or local preference call for it. We will explain the trade-offs for your house rather than defaulting to one answer.

Assess the whole system
Material, age, static and running pressure, visible corrosion, past repairs and water chemistry all get checked before anything is quoted.

Plan the routes and access
Runs are mapped through attic and wall cavities and access points are chosen where they cause the least damage and the easiest repair afterwards.

Protect the house
Floors, furniture and fixtures are covered, and dust control goes up before the first cut. This is the difference between a professional repipe and a mess.

Install the new system
New lines are run, supported and secured at the correct intervals, with manifolds or home-run branches where the layout suits, and correct penetration protection through plates.

Cut over and pressure test
Fixtures are transferred to the new lines, the old system is isolated and abandoned, and the whole installation is held under test pressure and inspected joint by joint.

Close up and clean
Access holes are patched to a finish-ready standard, the water is flushed through every fixture to clear debris, and the site is cleaned before we hand back.
